This course provides an introduction to substance use disorder treatment, including the different types of medications used to treat opioid use disorder, and how these medications work. Participants will also hear from patients about their experiences with substance use disorder treatment and how treatment medications played a significant role in their recovery.
Participants will learn about:
- That treatment is not a “one-size-fits-all” approach and that it involves a variety of interventions including behavioral therapies, counseling, support meetings, and medications.
- About the three FDA-approved medications used to treat opioid use disorder and how the medications work.
- The differences between an agonist, partial agonist, and antagonist medication.
- How medications for addiction treatment are effective in reducing substance use, increasing treatment engagement, and improving recovery outcomes.
